Summary
  • Shopify has five native discount types: percentage off, fixed amount off, free shipping, Buy X Get Y, and automatic discounts.
  • You create them in your Shopify admin under Discounts, set the conditions, and either publish as a code customers enter or as an automatic discount that applies without a code.
  • For basic promotions, the native system works well.
  • For tiered pricing, free gifts, bulk unique codes for influencer campaigns, or combining a product discount with free shipping in one offer, you will need a dedicated Shopify discount app such as Kite Discount & Free Gift

Discounts are one of the fastest ways to increase conversions, attract first-time customers, and boost average order value on Shopify. Whether you are running a seasonal sale, launching a new product, or rewarding loyal customers, Shopify gives you several built-in discount options, from percentage discounts and free shipping to Buy X Get Y offers.

But while Shopify's native discount engine is easy to use, it is not designed for every promotion. As your store grows, you may want to create tiered pricing, free gift campaigns, mix-and-match bundles, or combine multiple offers in ways that are not supported out of the box.

In this guide, we will show you how to set up discounts in Shopify, explain where native discounts work well, highlight their limitations, and help you decide when to use a dedicated discount app.

Which Shopify Discount Should You Use?

Before touching any settings, this table answers the most common decisions merchants face.

Goal Use This
Sitewide sale Automatic discount, percentage off
First purchase or welcome offer Discount code, percentage, or fixed amount
Buy one get one (BOGO) Buy X Get Y discount
Free shipping above a threshold Free shipping discount (Kite Discount & Free Gift for progress bars)
Reward higher spend (tiered) Shopify Functions or a discount app
Mix-and-match bundles Bundle app (e.g., Easy Bundle Builder)
Influencer or referral unique codes Bulk discount code generator
Free gift with purchase Discount app (e.g., Kite Discount, Free Gift & BOGO)
Combine product discount and free shipping Two separate discounts with combinesWith enabled, or a discount app

How to set up Discounts on Shopify without using an app

In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts in the left sidebar.

Types of Discounts You Can Create

  • Amount off products: Reduces the price of specific products or collections by a fixed amount or percentage.
  • Amount off order: Applies a discount to the entire cart total, great for sitewide sales.
  • Buy X Get Y: Classic BOGO or "spend X, get Y free/discounted" promotions.
  • Free shipping: Waives shipping costs, optionally with a minimum order requirement.

Setting Up a Discount Code

  1. Go to Discounts → Create discount → Discount code
  2. Enter a code (or click Generate for a random one)
  3. Choose the discount type (percentage, fixed amount, free shipping, etc.)
  4. Set the value (e.g., 20% off)
  5. Configure conditions:
    • Minimum purchase amount or quantity
    • Which products/collections does it apply to
    • Customer eligibility (everyone, specific segments, or specific customers)
  6. Set usage limits (total uses, or one per customer)
  7. Set active dates (start/end)
  8. Click Save

Setting Up an Automatic Discount

These apply automatically at checkout, no code needed.

  1. Go to Discounts → Create discount → Automatic discount
  2. Choose the type and configure the same options as above
  3. Set your start/end dates
  4. Click Save

Pro tip: Only one automatic discount can apply per order (unless you're on Shopify Plus, which supports discount stacking).

Combining Discounts

When creating a discount, scroll to the Combinations section to control whether it can stack with:

  • Other product discounts
  • Order discounts
  • Shipping discounts

Tips

  • Use discount groups to organize codes for different campaigns
  • Check discount performance right from the Discounts page: it shows usage, orders, and total savings given
  • For sale prices on individual products (not code-based), just edit the product's Compare at price field directly in the product editor

Shopify lets you generate up to 100,000 unique discount codes from a single discount in one batch. In the Discounts panel, create a new discount code and look for the option to generate multiple codes. Set the code format (random characters or a prefix with a random suffix), choose how many codes to generate, and export as a CSV. This is the native path for influencer campaigns, email sequences, or referral programs where each recipient needs a unique code.

For stores running ongoing influencer programs or large-scale SMS campaigns that need thousands of bulk discount codes regularly, plus the intelligence & features of a dedicated discount app, Kite Discount & Free Gift’'s bulk discount code generator handles generation and export at scale with a 100,000 per job limit (no overall limit) -workflow the native admin requires.

How to set up Shopify Discounts with an app

Kite is a Shopify app that helps you create advanced promotions, including free gifts, BOGO offers, tiered discounts, shipping discounts, and progress bars.

For this walkthrough, we’ll show you how to set up a Free Gift With Purchase campaign in which customers automatically receive a free gift after meeting a spending or quantity threshold.

Step 1: Tell Kite Your Goal and Offer Type

When you first open Kite, you'll see a short onboarding screen

  • Select Boost AOV as your goal, then choose Free gift with purchase as the offer type.

Depending on your goal, you can choose either Boost AOV or Improve Conversion, or both options. For a free gift campaign, Boost AOV would be a good starting point.

If you'd rather jump straight into creating your campaign, click Skip for now.

Step 2: Select Your Promotion Type

On the Select promotion type screen, go to Free gift and BOGO and select Free gift on product page/cart.

This creates a campaign that automatically adds a free gift when shoppers meet your eligibility criteria. Click the option to continue.

Step 3: Configure Your Free Gift Offer

Enter an offer name, then choose how customers qualify for the free gift by setting either a minimum purchase amount or a minimum quantity.

Next, click + Select gift products and choose the product you'd like to offer. If needed, you can also create multiple gift tiers with different spending thresholds.

Step 4: Configure Advanced Settings (Optional)

Scroll down to Advanced settings to configure any optional rules for your campaign.

Here, you can:

  • Limit how many times the gift can be redeemed per order.
  • Decide whether customers can remove the free gift from their cart.
  • Restrict the offer to specific customers, markets, or cart conditions.
  • Choose whether the promotion applies to one-time purchases, subscriptions, or both.

If you don’t need any of these restrictions, you can leave the default settings as they are.

Click Save when done. The offer is now created in Test mode, meaning it is not visible to real shoppers yet.

Step 6: Customise the Storefront Widget

After saving your offer, open the Storefront widget tab. This is where you customize how the promotion appears to shoppers.

You’ll see a live preview of the widget, along with Locked and Unlocked views so you can preview both customer experiences.

Click Edit and style the widget to personalize it. From here, you can:

  • Update the widget title and messaging.
  • Customize the text shoppers see before and after they unlock the free gift.
  • Change the button label and other on-screen text.
  • Adjust colours and styling to match your store’s branding.
  • Enable multiple languages if your store serves different markets.

Once you’re happy with the design, save your changes and continue to choose where the widget should appear on your storefront.

Step 7: Set Where the Widget Appears

In the Where to display section, choose where you want shoppers to see your promotion.

By default, Kite displays the widget on your product pages, cart page, and side cart. You can keep these settings or limit the widget to specific products or collections if the offer only applies to certain items.

Once you’ve chosen the placement, save your changes.

Step 7: Enable the App on Your Store and Go Live

Click Enable app to open the Shopify theme editor, then turn on Kite’s app embed and save your changes.

Return to Kite and use Test mode to preview the offer and make sure everything works as expected. Once you’re satisfied, switch the offer to Live to make it available to shoppers.

Where Native Shopify Discounts Break Down

Shopify's native discount system works well for many everyday promotions. However, a few limitations become apparent as your discount strategy grows more sophisticated.

You cannot combine a product discount and free shipping in one code

This is the most-searched discount question among Shopify merchants. Shopify does allow a product discount and a free shipping discount to work together natively because they're different discount classes. However, they must be created as two separate discounts with compatible combinesWith settings enabled on both. What Shopify doesn't support is combining both benefits into a single discount code. If you want customers to receive 15% off and free shipping from one code, you'll need a dedicated discount app.

Only one automatic discount applies per order

If you run a sitewide automatic 10% discount and also want a volume tier to apply when a customer buys 3 or more units, one of them will not fire. Shopify applies the first matching automatic discount and stops. Merchants typically try to work around this with codes, but that creates friction and relies on customers remembering to enter one.

Tiered pricing and quantity breaks do not exist natively

"Buy 2 save 10%, buy 3 save 15%, buy 5 save 20%" requires either custom Shopify Functions logic or a discount app. Shopify has no native interface for configuring progressive discount tiers. Without a visual progress indicator, customers also have no way to see the savings opportunity before checkout, which is where most of the conversion value is lost.

When You Need a Shopify Discount App

Native Shopify discounts are an excellent starting point for straightforward promotions like coupon codes, automatic discounts, free shipping offers, and Buy X Get Y campaigns. If your promotional strategy involves multiple conditions, advanced discount logic, or personalized incentives, you will likely need a dedicated Shopify discount app.

Five Mistakes Shopify Merchants Repeatedly Make With Discounts

  • Setting combinesWith on only one side: Combining discounts requires compatible settings on both discounts in the pair. Setting "combines with order discounts" on your volume discount means nothing if the promo code does not also have "combines with product discounts" enabled. Both sides must match.
  • Running automatic discounts that conflict with each other: Two automatic discounts active simultaneously, with one firing and silently blocking the other, is one of the most common support tickets merchants raise. Audit your active automatic discounts before launching any new campaign.
  • Making the savings invisible: A tiered discount nobody can see until the order summary is not a tiered discount that moves behavior. The conversion value of progressive pricing comes almost entirely from customers seeing how close they are to the next tier while they are still building their cart.
  • Using discount codes where automatic discounts would convert better: Customers forget to apply codes. Codes create a moment of friction, prompting customers to search for a better code elsewhere. For sitewide promotions, automatic discounts consistently outperform equivalent code-based offers in conversion rate.
  • Discounting everything at the same depth: Running the same discount percentage across your entire catalog obscures the relative value of higher-margin products and trains customers to wait for sales. Scoped discounts on specific collections or thresholds protect your margin while still driving purchase behaviour
